Selig spokesman denies meeting had been scheduled

A meeting planned for February between baseball commissioner Bud Selig and the 58 living members of the Hall of Fame to discuss the possible reinstatement of Pete Rose has been put on hold, Cleveland Indians Hall of Famer Bob Feller said Tuesday.

"That meeting was called off," said Feller, one of the most outspoken opponents of Rose's possible reinstatement. "[Selig] wants more time, but I think he knows what he's going to do, which is nothing. My guess would be that he's not going to reinstate Pete Rose."

The cancellation, which baseball denied Tuesday, could be a sign that, following recent revelations of Rose's tax problems and continued gambling habits, Selig is beginning to have reservations about ending Rose's 14-year exile.

The meeting with Hall members originally was scheduled for Jan. 17 but was postponed several weeks ago to an undetermined date in February. Rich Levin, Selig's chief spokesman, denied Feller's claim that the meeting has been canceled.

"It has never been set up," Levin said. "I think the commissioner still plans to have one, but there has been no date established yet."

Asked if the meeting has become less of a priority following revelations of a $151,689 federal tax lien against Rose's Sherman Oaks, Calif., home and reports Rose was spotted gambling in Las Vegas during a trade show last week, Levin was noncommittal.
