I just noticed on espn.com that the A's signed Cust to a minor league contract. Isn't this the guy BB was so high on?

Beane was HUGE on Cust a couple of years ago but couldn't get him. After being a highly touted prospect though it seems like his career has hit a wall. Still no risk in seeing what he can do at Sacramento.

Nice pick-up. He put up big numbers in Colorado's minor league system a couple of years ago before moving to Baltimore. He's been on BB's wish list for years. Can't hurt to check him out.

On another note, he was also involved in one of the all-time funniest plays a couple of years ago. The O's were mounting a comeback against the Yanks in the bottom of the 9th. Two out, down by a run, and Cust gets caught in a pickle between 3rd and home. Anyway, the throw goes towards 3rd, so Cust changes direction and starts running towards home again, only after all the throws, now no one is covering home. Cust has about a 30 foot lead on the guy with the ball, so all he has to do is run home and the game is tied. Only he trips and falls flat on his face 15 feet from the plate, and gets tagged out as he tries to crawl home. Pretty funny.

His K/AB ratio puts Jose Hernandez to shame!

This guys was one of the hottest prospects around a few years ago. Now that his career is in the tank, the A's are able to acquire him. Figures.

Cust is an all or nothing swinger, and is a born
dh.

"... and is a born DH."

Yeh, but unlikely in the major leagues.

BigThree, on that play where he falls 15' short of home. Are you sure that wasn't Jeremy Giambi in disguise?

eyleenn, your comment brings to mind the old stock market adage, "buy low, sell high." It also seems to be the A's philosophy is signing and trading players. Unfortunately, the results in such player dealings don't pay off quite as well as they do in the stock market.
