ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Outfielder Chris Singleton agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The team also sent catcher Pete Laforest outright to Triple-A Durham and invited him to major league spring training. He was designated for assignment on Jan. 18, when the Devil Rays signed free agent outfielder Danny Bautista.

Singleton, also invited to major league spring training, has a .273 career batting average with 118 doubles and 276 RBIss in five seasons with Baltimore, Oakland and the Chicago White Sox.

The 32-year-old outfielder didn't play in 2004. Two years ago, he hit .245 with 24 doubles for the Athletics.
