Byrnes hitting 5th, Houston Street, Roster
OAFC BBS - All Topics: Archive: Byrnes hitting 5th, Houston Street, Roster
I think this is a great idea, Byrnes is one of the best pure fastball hitters on the club. Today he raked a pitch for a double with the bases loaded, batting 5th. Hitting behind Durazo and Chavez would give him a lot of RBI chances (and put him out of our $$ reach next year, unless we sign him to an extension - work on it Beane my boy!)
how about this for a lineup?
1. Kotsay CF (L)
2. Kendall C (R)
3. Chavez 3B (L)
4. Durazo DH (L)
5. Byrnes LF (R)
6. Hatteburg 1B (L)
7. Crosby SS (R)
8. Swisher RF (L or R)
9. Ellis / Scutaro / Ginter (all bat R)
I think Dan Johnson shoudl start at AAA again anbd if anyone falters, he should be up ready to DH or play first.
I think Ellius should start at AAA to regain his stroke. Make Ginter the starter at 2B and keep Scutaro for the backup. Melhuse for backup catcher (as usual)
As the 4th outfielder, I'd keep Kielty up here. He may still be of some use to us. Send Thomas to AAA and call him up later if he does well. Maybe we can keep Jermaine Clark around? Or Smith?
As for the pen, I guess Bradford's out for a while. As much as I like Street (and he had a great game today apparently), I think they'll probably start him at AAA to get more experience. That leaves us with Rincon, Calero, Cruz, Dotel, Duke and probably Yabu in the pen. I think Duke will get more time as a specialist (shame, I always wanted to see what he could do as a starter) and Yabu will be mop-up long relief... Duke can also do this and we may need a lot of that this year! I think Garcia needs some more time at AAA.
As for the Rotation, I'd go with:
I guess we won't need a 5th starter for a while, I hope it will be Meyer and I hope he will be ready.

Byrnes is not a good choice to bat 5th against RH's. His OPS numbers against righties last year were not good. Against righties I'd probably bat him 7th unless and until he proves he can consistently perform against RHP.
His numbers against lefties were tremendous, however. He could go in the 2-hole or 5-hole against southpaws.

I agree, Byrnes is an excellent choice to hit 5th ... against lefties. I still think that a platoon of Byrnes (lefties) and Thomas (righties) could very possibly be an explosive duo.
I agree Street may start in AAA, but for a different reason. If Tyler Johnson continues to pitch well, I think the A's will be hard-pressed not to keep that 2nd lefty on the roster. If they don't, I really think it will be Street who stays ... that's if they elect to carry 12 pitchers, which they are considering. Personally, I think they need the extra player on the bench. Course, if either Blanton or Meyers don't make the cut, then it is likely they will move Yabu to starter and either Johnson or Street in the pen would keep the staff at 11.
Between Meyer and Blanton ... why does everyone think if one goes down, it will be Meyer? I think Meyer has more upside than Blanton and he is a lefty. Course, could be they will both stick. But I just think Meyer is going to be the better pitcher.

Tyler Johnson seems to have a lot of potential. I'd like to see them figure out a way to keep him.

look for rubi and chavvy to swap spots in the order w/chavvy batting 4th. This will set up mad rbi opportunities. I thought macha already intimated that this was going to be the case.

Doug Miller of MLB.com must have read your post:
well you know, i do have an "inside track" with those reporter guys!
classic byrnesey quote:
....Byrnes said he wouldn't change his approach at the plate based on where he was batting.
"Doesn't matter," Byrnes said. "As long as I'm hitting in the top nine spots, I could care less."

Is Byrnesy hitting 5th again today?? He hit another homer - someone let me know if they know.

I like Byrnes' aggressive nature in the 5th hole, rather than a patient guy drawing a walk and loading the bases for a not so good hitter to follow. It'd be a nice look. I heard that Yabu might be good enough on a first tour azound the league...and by that time after some work in Sac, Meyer may take the 5th spot. With Bradford down, I think it paves the way for the A's to keep Johnson at least in the outset. See how he responds.

WHERE'S THE BEEF? Oh, that's right, Hatteberg just hasn't got it going yet.
