Schott-Hofmann bow out as men who owned the team as a business. It was available at a discount rate, Haas was ailing, and they liked the idea of keeping the A's in the Bay Area.

But there always was something interim about them, as if they were keeping the seat warm for parties more enthusiastic about owning a baseball team.

Monte gets it right.
