Ratto's message to A's fans:

"If Miami and Dade County vote to lose their collective mind and give Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria a $400 million stadium, Selig is coming for a new target. Flushed with temporary success over crushing Montreal and squeezing Miami, he will head straight here with the same strategies in mind.

One strategy is to get Oakland and its hilariously delusional mayor to put up money it doesn't have for a stadium it doesn't know where to locate.

The other is to give Oakland and its ludicrously confused mayor the same ultimatum, hope Oakland can't do anything about it, and then present the A's to Las Vegas.

... Vegas is, and we are sure the good people of Las Vegas will forgive us for putting it this way, the new Tampa. It may be the shiniest city in the world, it may have provided the next staple of cable TV programming [poker], but it is still Tampa.

The business end of an extortionist's gun."

Unfortunately, Ratto is probably correct. I am sooo tired of this freaking blackmail...

Vegas wants a team, any team. They do not care if it is the A's or the Marlins or Devil Rays. They are hungry for real pro sports and no matter what the Ego-maniac Steve Wynns says there is money there to get a ballpark and buy the team. LOTS OF MONEY! And before I start getting bashed for this I have lots of family in Vegas and they are very well connected with the people that are trying to make this happen. Vegas is still the fasted growing city in the US and there is enough of a fan base to make it work. They are not counting on the tourist to make it but all the newly relocated locals. The rest is just gravy. When we go down there (about 3 times a year I rearly ever see the inside of a casino. Unless we are going to a show...But I always go to the minor league hockey or to the 51's game. It will work but hopfully with a Florida team!

we keep drawing 42,000 (including schoolers thanks) - vegas and portland,o are a safe distance away. i have a bad feeling about the miami overconfidence. with 2 ws titles, i think they'll work it out in dolphin land. i see tampa as the competition. small crowds, no history of success, abysmal digs. if we can't outlast them, well...

If a team goes to Vegas I hope it's the Devil Rays. I spend a lot of time in South Florida and have gotten attached to the Marlins. If the Marlins got a retractable roof stadium attendance would grow by leaps and bounds. Many residents of South Florida specificly seniors will not brave the delays that come with baseball in the summer at Dolphins Stadium. Attendence would suffer some during football season, but if the Marlins continue to field a winner it would average out fine. And it would be cool to have an American League team other than the A's in Sin City. It sure would be a fun weekend trip to see the green and gold in Vegas. I wonder if the heckler would relocate. It seems like a perfect place for him.

My understanding is that the D'Rays have a 30-year lease on their lousy dome, which is the biggest obstacle to moving.

good point eyl. scouted web for lease breaking items like attendance clauses etc...nothing. i've always thought a lease was an item made to be broken (paid off) buy the suitor. really no mention of it in trop field's case. major bummer.
