FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 19, 2006

A's Agree to Terms with Free Agent LHP Scott Sauerbeck

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's today announced that they have agreed to terms with free agent left-handed pitcher Scott Sauerbeck on a one-year contract. Sauerbeck will join the club in Denver for tonight's game against Colorado.

Sauerbeck was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Cleveland this year before he was designated for assignment on June 9 and unconditionally released on June 16. He allowed a .196 opponents batting average, including .136 against right-handed hitters and .154 with runners in scoring position. The 34-year old left-hander allowed just 1 of his 10 inherited runners to score and first batters faced were 4 for 20 (.200) with four walks.

Sauerbeck began his Major League career with Pittsburgh in 1999 and pitched for the Pirates through the 2003 season. He has also pitched for Boston (2003) and Cleveland (2005-06) and is 20-17 with five saves and a 3.83 ERA in 449 career appearances, all in relief.

he was also arrested this year and hid in the bushes after the cops pulled over his car.

He and esteban will become "fast" friends - and maybe drinking buddies too

I read about the possibility in this morning's Chronicle. I'd forgotten about his arrest. Seems like Billy is straying from his past M.O. of only signing "character" players.

Does Beane have some type of welfare-to-work agreement with Mark Shapiro, whereby he gives a job to every pitcher the Indians cut?

Speaking of which, I hope Kaz Tadano isn't hiding in those bushes when Louzia and Sauerbraten jump in there!

This tells me Joe Kennedy isn't coming back anytime soon which already seemed likely.

Scott had some additional explaining to do because the woman in the car with him (the driver) was not his wife.

Ah yes, the fetching Lily Miller...

Oh Well, at least the A's won't have to spring for a new photo to put up on the jumbotron when he enters the game!
