TIMES WIRE SERVICES
baseball notes

The A's claimed left-hander Lenny DiNardo off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

DiNardo, 27, was 1-2 with a 7.85 ERA with Boston last season. He appeared in 13 games, including six starts, and was on the disabled list with neck problems from May 24-Aug. 31.

The A's also designated outfielder Hiram Bocachica for assignment and sent outfielder Charles Thomas outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

DiNardo was waived so Boston could officially add outfielder J.D. Drew to its roster. The club announced a five-year, $70 million contract with Drew on Jan. 26, seven weeks after preliminary agreement was reached. The deal had to be reviewed by Major League Baseball, and the team needed an open slot on its 40-man roster for Drew.

After the preliminary deal was reached Dec. 5, lawyers fashioned an arrangement that would allow Boston to opt out of the guaranteed money for 2010 and 2011 if Drew's right shoulder injury recurs. The shoulder was operated on in 2005.

Drew, 31, became a free agent when he opted out of the last three years of his five-year, $55 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dinardo move is interesting because he was a starter in the minors and had decent numbers. His MLB numbers have not been great. He's basically had over a 2:1 k:bb ratio in the minors and is still young - and a lefty. I think he could be a sleeper candidate to make the bullpen.

Don't the A's have enough bullpen depth.

RP-Windsor, Halsey, Embree, Gaudin, Calero, Duke
CP-Street

In the minors...you'll have Flores, Marshall, Komine, Castilla, Shafer, McBeth, Mitchell, Robertson, and probably a half a dozen more relief prospects ready.

Bullpen maybe the deepest part of the entire A's system right now.

true, which is why anyone of those guys could become trade bait now or later. You can NEVER have too much pitching - right now we are stocked with bullpen / 6th starter types. That is a great thing.

Did I hear we picked up Squiggy to be a bullpen catcher too?

Good, have no idea why 24 isn't put away and eventually retired.

A's may have to look for more OF depth, at least in ST.

You know something bad with a player's health was gonna happen, who knew it would be this early.

Kielty tears his meniscus in his left knee and will be out 3-6 weeks. This have really opened the door for Goleski to make the 25 man opening day roster.

Also with Kielty basically missing most of the ST ABs he'd get all this upoming month, could he start the season in AAA and Bocachica who the A's brought back recently replace him on the opening day roster.
