A's claim RHP Ruddy Lugo off waivers from Tampa Bay

OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's today claimed right-handed pitcher Ruddy Lugo off waivers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Lugo is scheduled to join the A's on Friday in Oakland.

Lugo was 2-0 with a 9.28 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Devil Rays this year. He allowed a .362 opponents batting average before he was optioned to Triple-A Durham on May 7. The 27-year old Lugo went 2-1 with a 1.84 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the Bulls. He allowed a .231 opponents batting average, including .167 (4 for 24) against right-handers. Lugo was designated for assignment by the Devil Rays on June 12.

Lugo made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2006 and went 2-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 64 relief appearances. He was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 1999 June draft and also played in the Los Angeles, Houston and Florida farm systems before making his Major League debut with Tampa Bay.

Who gets sent down? Lewis?

I know his ERA looks bad before today's game but he hasn't allowed a run since that horrific start he made he allowing 10 ERs in 3.1 IP.

Since then, he's given up 2 hits, 0 BBs, and K'ed 3 in 8.2 IP since that bad debut.

I would guess somebody like Flores even though he too has pitched well since being called up. Marshall would be the likely choice if you just looked at their #s and really production but the A's need to keep him on their roster or he'll be sent back to ChiSox.

yeah why don't they send him to AAA and get sorted out. maybe flores but he has pretty well and that guy cannot have a ton of options left!

Erasmo Ramirez is most likely to get sent down. When Harden returns, it will be interesting, because I think it is between Marshall being returned and Flores being sent down. Lewis has done an excellent job in the pen. Kudos to Geren for that one, because after his shellacking by the Sox in his one start, he said he felt with his stuff, he would do well as a reliever.

By the way, am wondering if Lugo will apologize or say anything to Swisher for his charades on the mound after he k'd him in Tampa, a few weeks ago. It was like he had a personal vendetta against him. These guys need to be careful of their actions, they never know where they will end up :)

Well Lugo will need the luck of the Irish to avoid the A's giving him a Ruddy good burlap bag beating party on that Golden Dome of his as an initiation. :)

After which, all will be forgiven.

Peace be with you.

Flores has Marshall beat production-wise and he can go multiple innings and really isn't seen as a "specialist" that Marshall was brought in to be.

Marshall hasn't pitched a full inning of relief since the 18th of last month when the A's kicked the crap out of SF 15-3 that Friday night.

Now do the A's wanna send Marshall back to the ChiSox or send Flores down even though as of now, he's probably the more major league ready reliever.

Keep Marshall. He's young, throws from a bizarre angle. Will get better. Will have options next season if needed. Flores will still be available.
